You can follow his thoughts and part of his work in the Clearbold Newsletter and some of his articles at Smashing Magazine. He specializes in making things easier, more open to people. That focus makes him work creating and investing both time and resources in platforms that can solve problems that arise over time. It assists you during project scoping, resource assignment, cost and revenue planing, risk and communication management. TaskJuggler provides an optimizing scheduler that computes your project time lines and resource assignments based on the project outline and the constraints that you have provided. The built-in resource balancer and consistency checker offload you from having to worry about irrelevant details and ring the alarm if the project gets out of hand. The flexible as-many-details-as-necessary approach allows you to plan your project as you go, making it also ideal for new management strategies such as Extreme Programming and Agile Project Management. If you are about to build a skyscraper or just want to put together the release schedule of your open source project, TaskJuggler is the right tool for you. Learning vi or vim is not easy. But it doesn't have to be that difficult, either. It is, in any case, faster, more powerful, and more productive than editing with any other editor, so you would do very well in investing the time and effort to learn it. Being a vi lover myself, I came up with the idea of providing a graphical cheat sheet for those learning vi or vim, and I also found out it was a very good way to structure a tutorial. Here are the results for your learning enj...

Below you’ll find bet 10 tutorials on pixel perfect design available on the web. Pixel perfect design is something of a lost art, you know. Mostly because it’s an incredibly laborious and long work; it’s a technique that requires dedication, effort and an almost obsessive level of attention to detail and not many designers are cut out for it. It requires a Zen-like personality and meditation-like levels of concentration. Here at Iconshock we decided to become archeologists, historians and paleontologists; adventurers, searching for a long lost past; explorers, looking for ancient documents; collectors, carefully selecting from the rabble raw gems of pure design. In short, we decided to explore the web and get you the best tutorials we could find on this humble craft. We have carefully selected the best of the best among them and we now present them, along with an useful overview on it’s content and quality, for your viewing (and reading) pleasure. Master perfect Design 1 The beauty of the pixel grid. We kick off the list with a tutorial of our own creation because, among the best ones available, this one is certainly important. A nice piece piece of non fiction, it is. We starts off explaining the importance of mastering pixel perfect design and actually make a compelling argument of it because mobile devices are taking slowly taking over the marketplace and to design for the largest possible market means to design mobile. The article then goes into detail about the nature of pixel perfect design and it’s subtleties. what is a pixel, how does it work, what are it’s limits? Those questions are all fully addressed here before going into the tutorial itself, the hands on experience that will give you the basic techniques and skills to design with maximum pixel perfection. Following that, the article offers an overview of several advanced techniques to help you go further down the road and gives a sneak peek into the future of pixel perfect design and scree...

If you don’t already know, over 70% of internet users are searching the world wide web in another language to the one you’re reading now. A little surprised? Well, if you thought simply changing the language tab on your website was enough to satisfy your users, then it’s time to get a little more savvy about your website’s international appeal Gone are the days when people will struggle to read global English websites, looking up the odd word in the dictionary. Users want culture specific pages, with everything particular to their requirements, and that includes social media and blog entries. Though it may seem a lot of work and a little daunting, it’s not and making the required differences can really expand appeal. Here are 6 top tips on how to maximize this cultural online opportunity and turn that 70% potential loss in users into a fantastic 70% boost. Simple Navigation & Website Design does it! The first thing you need to do is take a good, long look at the design of your website. Can it support users flicking between languages? Single-language websites can be relatively simple in their web-design, so you may have to make some fundamental changes before you can go global and expand linguistically. One great tool is Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); it allows you to keep the same template for your website, but change the content as you expand into other sectors. If you’re not already familiar with CSS, check out the HTML.net tutorials that talk you through how to use CSS and its benefits for multi-website use. You also need to make sure that your website is navigable for all language users. Western languages tend to read from left to right, so all of the important information on a webpage can usually be found in the top left hand side. However, Arabic or Hebrew, for example, reads from right to left, so a western design template would be ineffective. To keep things simple, choose a top-tab design to make it as universal as possible (see Apple’...

Can buying Facebook Fans actually add value to my Fan Page? I’ve bought fans before and realized they are fake/inactive profiles, are there any legitimate companies out there?…Why don’t I just build my Fan Page organically?…Why don’t I just use Facebook Ads to generate Fans?…These are all questions that many businesses face when starting up a Fan Page for their company, but should you buy your Facebook Fans? I know this method is frowned upon by many marketers and is even seen as cheating, but there are legitimate companies that can offer this service and deliver tangible results, usually through Facebook Ads. With all the personal date Facebook hold on all their 800+ million members, using their targeting Ads platform to dig down to your chosen demographic can really give your Fan Page a boost, especially if your just starting out. Beware, many companies have flushed advertising £££’s down the drain on unsuccessful campaigns, even though they may have targeted their demographic extremely well, a lack of split testing can often spell the downfall for the majority of first time advertisers! Why Not Go Further With the Contents? You may be tempted by some of the cheaper companies that offer 1000′s of Fans for a low price and from members on Fiverr and even Ebay but many of these companies will be using black-hat techniques to generate fake fans that won’t increase activity on your Fan Page at all, just numbers. You now have 2 options when wanting to pay to increase your fan count, Facebook Advertising or purchasing fans.  If you’re not interested in paying to increase your fan count then organic growth will be the best approach. Facebook Advertising is a great platform to specifically target users on Facebook according to your chosen demographic, interests, education, workplace and more!  But if you don’t have much experience with Facebook Ads, you may end up throwing money down the drain.  To create an effective campaign you need to spl...

WDS: Hello Tizieu welcome to webdesignshock.com. Why don’t you start of by telling us a little about yourself, your professional trajectory and work? Tizieu: Hey! I'm a French illustrator and graphic designer. After studying in several academies, I worked in an advertising agency for several years, where I learned to develop many aspects of my expertise, and perfected with passion my drawing, painting, wall painting, and custom toy design amongst many other abilities. One my favorite things to do with my free time is Interior design. Also, I can count within one of my greatest prides the production of several custom toy models and the creation of two mascot designs. Now a days, I work from a quiet home in the countryside and perform as a freelance professor in graphic design. WDS: What are your artistic tools or mediums of choice? Tizieu: I think pencil and paper will always be the first tool of choice for any designer. But sometimes with a creative mind the simplicity of a pencil and a piece of paper won’t always do, so I’ve learned to make use of everything around me, and I have learned to be innovative by creating pieces such as murals. But in general, I can say that I’ll always be attracted to the artistic techniques and tools that are yet unknown to me. WDS: With the evolution of graphic design into a future where technology enhancement is just a click away. Which would you say that you prefer and that suits best your line of work: the traditional and handmade techniques or the digital? Tizieu: Hummm… I’m always working on my computer, but I never let the pencil and the piece of paper leave my sight. The computer will always be a great tool to achieve an effect like brush stroke or a line of spray paint. But I do have to confess; that the traditional design techniques may play an advantage when you have the chance to touch the piece of paper or the real thing. I would say in a way I prefer the digital methods most of the ...

Many of you probably are appalled just by having to read the title to this post, nevertheless to say out loud. Who in their right mind would think that an experienced web designer devoted to the “superior art form of the future” (web design) can be related in some way with the vanity and silliness of fashion design, the industry in which apparently the biggest concern goes to finding the latest “earring trend” for summer? or in simple words being said: seriously….. to looking pretty?! But no need to worry, our devoted readers…nonono, we at wedesignshock.com haven’t gone completely mad, but instead have the sanity to remain open minded to acknowledge and investigate ALL the fields of knowledge (including the ones you hate and under look) with the propose of always maintaining you, our followers up to date and to provoke those creative minds of yours to an awakening, that when you read a post of this nature is bound to happen when you give yourselves the chance as a designer to think outside the box. Although this can be considered by many of you as a bizarre and almost offensive association between two professions in design that couldn’t differ more the one from the other, a comparison that to the majority of you is probably like associating oil with water, the profound investigation of each and every detail of web design has always been our goal here at webdesignshock.com, and with it comes the research of ALL the disciplines that have come to influence web design’s development over the course of the years. Because you’ve gotta admit fellow web designers, that those of you that close your minds in a narcissistic approach to web design and ignore all other current fields of design, only caring for web design topics and your OWN appreciation of visual aesthetic, are narrow minded web designers/developers that are definitely bound to fail in maintaining yourselves in the business on the long run. So with this piece, we’re looking into the most kno...

Re-branding your company after a few years of being on the market, when it has reached a solid costumer background, is the best strategy to boost the market placement that you have achieved, and it gives you the possibility to place your product amongst younger generations of customers with a more modern approach to your corporative identity. But Re-Branding is not something to be taken lightly, because you might just be “fixing what isn’t broken”, in changing a solid corporative image into something that doesn’t click amongst your audience or that they just simply hate! … Or even worse you could fail to reach a younger costumer and loose the brand followers you’ve assured over the years all for a lousy new corporate image. So, like they say: “if it isn’t broken don’t fix it!” look at Coca-Cola for instance, while Pepsi has re-branded over 11 times since its creation, Coca-Cola has maintained the same brand image since its foundation (for over a hundred years). You see, when you’ve reached a solid corporative image, this is something to be maintained and made stronger over the years, and to be played around with remember that from a well kept corporative image depends half or most of your company’s success. Here are some the major companies of the world that we’ve summed up which we have failed in achieving a successful re-branding process, for you to check out and avoid ever falling into the same pattern… Logo Re-design that Flopped! Ok so you have to admit that sometimes even an amazing logo re-design may take a while to reach customer approval since Customers have a tendency to attach themselves to preset ideas and a sudden change in a brand image they love and follow will confuse them to the point of dislike. But hey logo re-design is not something to be scared of, in fact when its done in the right way it can have a major positive impact in your company’s success. just always make sure that you’re taking a re-branding for the right reasons and not just ...

When it comes to creating a successful login web design, although not all the rules are written in stone, there are certain features in the construction of the design that should be kept, in order to construct a model that guarantees a login outline that better suits moderns user needs. A login should especially thrive on being up to date, functional, secure, quick and accessible; amongst other useful qualities it should have to assure its success amid web users, and above all to secure the profitability of your design. What to do, good practices In order to construct a design that has these qualities, we’ve outlined the following practical guide of features described in a list of good practices when it comes to the making of a great login web design. Gain some time using expandable rollover windows or boxes This trait, popular now a days in login web design models, allows users to access within the login space without the distress of having to wait for the loading of an entire page, since it displays the login form automatically and leaves it available on display, with the additional option of clicking outside and having it roll up or disappear. A feature that will assure the permanence of hasty users that prefer leaving the task at hand and going to a new page, instead of going through the haggles of waiting on a eternal loading process, after having to click on several additional times. When possible, please use Ajax Is a feature available in many sites included in the everyday routine of website users. It assures an immediate access to the specific tool that concerns you in a web page, by loading only the section that you click on and leaving in standby the rest of the page. Including this quality in the web design process of a login model, assures a quick login for the user through an easy going login progression, this for you as web constructer is useful to guarantee the permanence of the user in your website. Never forget,...

Here on webdesignshock.com we’re always on the lookout for the latest and everything fresh in web designs plug-ins, tools, etc. for all our web knowledge enthusiastic readers, although sometimes it’s not necessarily time to  highlight the new but to acknowledge an on growing plug in use trend that solidify its acceptance amongst users, thanks to its outstanding features. Having said this, a successful website nowadays is considered to be one that responds to the time constraints and thirst for information demands of web surfers. In this sense, the hit of a site depends to the amount of information supplied vs. the speed that it’s provided in. Surely enough, if users enter a web where they must bear a never ending waiting loading period of 5 or 10 clicks until finally being able to access concrete information of their search for topic, in the future these will be users that quickly run away for your site, or even worse, that will avoid entering your site ever again. Incorporating CSS Menus, you will guarantee a search friendly site This is why, along with providing a site that’s visually enhanced to serve the upcoming trends in web design, or serving a significant load of information about a certain topic, you should care for supplying a search friendly, easy to update web site that delivers information in an immediate fashion. When providing the visitor with a website that serves this purpose, the use of an outstanding menu design, (or several of them), that is effective to the needs of the information eager, hectic visitor, can become the number one tool in your site to ensure the permanence of visitor for long periods of time. Also, the organization and categorization of the access points for the information you provide in a web site is crucial for visitors’ quick understanding of the site and the information that’s being provided. In this sense, CSS Menus are another great example of CSS power allowing the web designer to turn a boring access list, i...

Have you ever feel the need to get more followers in a social network? Well, most of us have and we cannot excuse for that: it’s human nature to get recognition. Social networks have integrated the relationships and the interactions we have with the technological aspect of our lives, and that’s why we feel the need to use them all day. But today we are going to focus on Twitter. This social network started as an informative tool but very soon became a social network to share any type of content. As it grew, its very purpose was vanishing to make room for spammers and other users, so it appeared the necessity to improve the tool to make it more relevant, However, people still use it the wrong way. So that’s why we wanted to publish useful recommendations, tools and apps to help you make your experience better. Getting High quality followers The next ways to get followers are the ones we choose as high quality, since they are clean and easy ways to obtain followers who would like your content and engage with it, meaning more retweets, mentions and follows. By implementing all of these you’ll see a high impact on your following / followers rate, without affecting your timeline and the quality of your tweets. Making a giveaway A giveaway can be done for any reason: because of the anniversary of your blog, because you hit a milestone or just because you’re a great guy. Giveaways consist in selecting prizes (or a prize) and create any kind of contest with it. The sponsors tend to like giveaways because they get exposure to their products and the bloggers win because they have a product to offer. But regardless of the purpose, giveaways can be used in addition to get more visits, get more subscribers or get more followers in social networks. if you’re planning to make a giveaway, remember that a great way to promote it is through social networks, and twitter is probably the quickest one to achieve great results.
